Cat not eating? Here's what it usually means
A cat who hasn't eaten in 24 hours needs attention. Here's why they stop, what to try at home, and when to call the vet.
Typical risk level: 🟡 Watch closely
A cat who skips one meal is usually fine. A cat who hasn't eaten in 24 hours needs attention. A cat who hasn't eaten in 48 hours is a real medical concern — cats can develop a serious liver condition (hepatic lipidosis) from prolonged fasting, especially if they're overweight.
Why cats stop eating
- Stress — new pet, moving, visitors, a noisy renovation
- Dental pain — they want to eat but it hurts
- Nausea or upset stomach
- Food change — cats are notoriously picky
- Illness — kidney disease, urinary issues, infections, thyroid problems
Try this first
- Warm the food slightly — it boosts the smell.
- Offer something irresistible: a spoon of plain tuna in water, or warmed wet food.
- Move the bowl somewhere quiet and away from the dog.
- Check the mouth gently for redness, broken teeth, or bad smell.
🔴 Call the vet if
- No food for 24 hours (especially if also no water)
- Vomiting, hiding, or weight loss
- Yellowing of the gums or eyes
- Straining in the litter box (urinary blockage — emergency)
