Puppy diarrhea: when it's normal vs when to rush in
Puppies dehydrate fast. Here's how to tell the difference between mild upset stomach and something that needs the vet today.
Typical risk level: 🟡 Watch closely
Puppy tummies are sensitive. A single soft stool after a treat or a new food is rarely a crisis. But puppies dehydrate fast — much faster than adult dogs — so anything more than mild needs attention within a day.
Common causes
- Diet change — switched food too quickly
- Stress — new home, vet visit, travel
- Eating something they shouldn't — table scraps, garbage, a sock
- Parasites — worms, giardia, coccidia (very common in puppies)
- Viruses — parvovirus is the big scary one and can be fatal
Mild diarrhea — what to try at home (for 12–24 hours)
- Withhold food for 4–6 hours (do NOT withhold water).
- Offer a bland diet: boiled plain chicken + plain white rice, small portions.
- Plain canned pumpkin (1–2 tsp) can help firm stool.
- Reintroduce normal food gradually over 2–3 days.
🔴 Go to the vet today if you see any of this
- Blood in the stool, or black tarry stool
- Vomiting on top of the diarrhea
- Puppy is lethargic, weak, or won't drink
- Diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours
- Puppy is under 12 weeks old or unvaccinated — parvo risk
